Making Faces is the wonderful true story of the journey that Logan Bristow and her family took as they followed the treatment plan for Logan's cleft lip and palate at the BC's Childrens Hospital.

Over the years, AboutFace has learned that the best way to prepare children for the treatment of any medical condition is to address their concerns, fears and unknowns. Children and parents alike are better prepared if they are able to read, discuss and question the process. This process helps them to understand and that reduces fear and builds acceptance.

AboutFace is delighted to introduce a new educational resource for kids with cleft lip and palate from the perspective of the child. Making Faces: Logan's Cleft Lip and Palate Story, is a 100 page comprehensive picture, story-book documenting the treatment cycle of a young girl, Logan Bristow, born with a cleft lip and palate from birth to young adulthood. This book is designed to help parents talk to their children about their cleft and the treatment process they will undergo. It is both accurate in information and is written in simple language with lots of pictures to enable children to understand their journey and to support parents in discussing the issues with their child.

Based on Logan's personal story, she shares her cleft treatment experience from surgeries, orthodontics, speech, to social and school issues like teasing and bullying. There is an interview with Logan where she answers some frequently asked questions, a section on helping your child prepare for surgery, hospital stay, and school. "It was always my goal to help encourage and support cleft-affected families, but it is also important to demystify the cleft experience so that people can be educated and have a better understanding of what it means to grow up with a facial difference. This book does that," says Logan Bristow.

AboutFace hopes to disseminate the book to every family that has a child with a cleft lip and palate and to every clinic that treats clefts. As well, AboutFace hopes that all cleft clinics will provide a copy of this book to every parent of a baby born with a cleft lip and palate. It will make a huge difference in their ability to accept and manage the road ahead.
